WAIMATE CRICKET CLUB

The two day match at home against Celtic turned into a poker school after day one was cancelled, and day two the ground was still too damp to get started.

Since a certain club member has been haranguing the columnist, I have decided to use this space for a quick questionaire. 

1. Which Waimate person understands so little about rugby, that he writes a column on grid-iron in the USA?

2. Which senior player when asked about strike rate, can truthfully say over 50%, but actually be talking about LBW dismissals?

3. Who is the only ‘ginga’ that isn’t a member of the ‘ginger club’  in Waimate?

There are not necessarily any correct answers to these questions, other than to prove I like to get the last word!

Alan Reid did everything the columnist asked of him with a 10 wicket match bag that almost took Waimate from the bottom of the table to join Star at the top after Timaru had started the day in a strong position at 135-3 with not out batsmen Jordy Morrow on 80 and Hitesh Angrish 38, and while Morrow couldn’t add any further runs, Angrish went on to make 73. Reid took 6-57 and aided by some good fielding and bad running Timaru were dismissed 68 runs short of Waimate’s first innings 285.

Batting a second time Waimate’s captain Nathan Sew Hoy again got into the thirties as did Craig Booth but it was Hayden Matthews who top scored with an unbeaten 59 that allowed the declaration to come at 166-3. Needing 235 runs from only 26 overs was always going to be an uphill battle and wickets fell regularly as the chase went on. Waimate had a home game against competition leaders Timaru and batted first with Naffa 33 shaking off Friday nights excesses, Reuben Allan 32, Hayden Matthews with 22 getting off a run of ducks and Craig Booth a solid 37 allowing the team to be semi pleased at 161-6.

But ‘Rafferty Fox’ finally got his bat to do some talking as he found No 8 in the order to his liking, as well as the Timaru bowlers on his way to easily his highest score for Waimate (afternoon grades) of 99, and will no doubt be bitterly disappointed he didn’t get that extra run to feature on the Honours Board before departing for the Coast and a new job.

His innings (well supported by Chucky Sew Hoy with 16 not out) helped Waimate score 285 in their first innings.

The match is now poised at an interesting stage with Jordy Morrow (80*) and Hitesh Angrish (38*) batting when Timaru resume their innings next week on 135-3 and they may look to try and consolidate their position at the top of the table by targeting first innings points, but Alan Reid who already has all three wickets to fall will be looking for a good ‘bag’ for himself and to put Waimate in the box seat and get themselves off the bottom of the table.

Waimate Ladies were all out for 118 chasing 174 for victory against Craighead in their first game back since Christmas at Aorangi 2, but Cindy Halkett had lost none of her form unfortunately falling short of her fifty with 46 but at least having the bragging rights at home after outscoring her partner who had 3 chances in the long weekend.

Bronwyn Clark was the best of the Waimate bowlers with 2-19 off 6 overs.

Murray Prattley used the experience gained watching Twenty20 all day Friday as a warm up for his own batting on Saturday as he scored 50 helping Waimate easily chase down the 128 Celtic had been restricted to.

Connor Farrell followed up his fifty from a fortnight ago with 31 while Tim Suddaby continued on from his fifty the week before with 20 not out to get Waimate home safely with six wickets in hand.

All the bowlers contributed, but Sam Newman was the most successful with 4-26.

It is with great sadness that the Waimate Cricket Club extend their deepest regrets and condolences to the Tangiora family after the tragic loss of Wiremu last Friday.

Wiremu was a member of the Waimate Fourth Grade cricket team who are currently leading the competition, and I am sure he would be pleased to know that his team dedicated their win at the weekend to ‘Woody’.

Wiremu was also a participant in the twilight cricket competition, and had a relaxed approach to batting where he thought that all you had to do was lean back and ‘slap’ it.

Despite the best efforts of Tim Suddaby with 52 with the bat and 2-26 Waimate Second Grade fell 66 runs short chasing a target of 251 set by Roncalli.

Ryza Manson was in the runs again with 31 and El Sheppo scored 26 but eventually Waimate succumbed for 185 and with Celtic getting thrashed by Mackenzie/Geraldine the fight for finals places is closing up again.

This weekend the Waimate Cricket Club lost one of their long serving players, as Matt Devlin leaves Waimate to join his brother James (Jimmy D) in Aussie. He has played his cricket for Waimate for his whole life from Primary School JAB to his current rank as a first choice senior player.

My first involvement with Dev was when he was a precocious third former who couldn’t sit still but had that Devlin spirit of never lying down as he spent seemingly his whole life trying to beat older brother James (Jimmy) in any sport they played from the backyard cricket tests at home to touch and on field rugby.

Those that know Matt will know that schoolwork was never high on the agenda (although certain female teachers did gain favour), but if he could work out an angle to do something better in the sporting field, then he would give it a try. I remember being frustrated in the nets when trying to teach the kids to play straight and “through the V” when all he wanted to do was practice reverse sweeps or shots that he had seen Nathan Astle play in a one day game.

It is this determination that has been the hallmark of his contributions to Waimate cricket to date, as he has had to change through injury from a fiery left-arm quick to a wily left-arm spinner who is always keen to give the ball flight but can give it a ‘tweak’ when conditions suit. Many of us have seen him put his shoulder out before changing to spin, once when appealing as he threw his arms in the air, but although his efforts at the bowling crease have never waivered, it has been his batting which has improved the most in my time.

He capped off his school career with a century, a feat not many Waimate boys can boast, while since joining senior ranks he has managed at least one half century a season with 74 not out in 2006, 74 (out) in 2007 and 52 in 2008. You can read his stats and figures up until 2007 here and in due course these will be fully listed.

I wish Matt all the best on behalf of the club and hope that he keeps in contact with everyone whether by reading about our matches or via facebook, and to make sure whenever he is home visiting his Mum or Dad he brings his whites!

With both teams needing victory to have any chance at a final Waimate batted first with Matt Devlin opening in his club swansong before departing for Australia. It wasn’t a great send off and Waimate were soon in deep trouble at 58-5 before Alan Reid with 38 and Jason Sew Hoy 34 added some substance allowing Waimate to post a competitive 183. Tom McKnight had a successful day with the ball for Geraldine taking 3 of the first 4 wickets to fall.

Geraldine’s reply was built around Stephen Pagan’s 53, but unfortunately only Regan Tate with 35 got going and tight bowling, especially by Reuben Allan with 2-6 off six overs and good fielding saw Waimate dismiss Geraldine 16 runs short in another nailbiter. Alan Reid also capped off a good day by taking 2-25 and Matty D picked up one wicket.
