Seniors lose Outright to Roncalli
Daniel Dorgan was the toast of Roncalli returning from last week’s U18 tournament to take 7-19 and already has 10 wickets for the match as Roncalli routed Waimate for 44 and enforced the follow on at Knottingley Park where the our seniors still needed four more runs to make Roncalli bat again on day two.
Dorgan’s dominance with the ball was well supported by Tahir Afridi who has two three wicket hauls as well, while with the bat Harry Millar made a quick 42 not out while earlier Tom Pavletich, relieved of captaincy duties had his best knock of the season scoring 39 while most of his team got into double figures.
It was “one of those days” according to Waimate’s Alan Reid, and their second innings has been a big improvement with Glen Drake (who made the Canterbury U18 tournament team at this week’s tournament) making 45, and some hope was pinned on captain Jason Sew Hoy finding some form and turning the game into a competition by building on his 28 not out overnight.
Jason duly obliged going on to make 45, easily his best score this season, while young Lachie Robertson also showed good patience to finish 21 not out, his best senior score to date.
Set a target of 39 it took Roncalli 10 overs to win, but with a Christmas break ahead Waimate may return in 2012 recharged and still keen to defend their trophy.
Friday Night Twenty20
The latest round to be played between Waimate and competition leaders Timaru was abandoned meaning shared points and Waimate now moves into clear second. While Waimate and Timaru only have two matches each left to play and the other clubs three, a wet night, or a win and some other results to go Waimate’s way could see us progressing to our best ever Twenty20 finish yet – surprisingly the format we thought we would be strong at, we have yet to live up to the hype, so maybe it is this year!
