About Us

The Waimate Cricket Club celebrated 125 years of organised cricket in the district  in 2007 and continues to thrive in the modern era despite competition from numerous other sporting and leisure activities now available to sports minded athletes. This reason, alongside the 7 day working week means that it is becoming more and more difficult to not only attract players and children to our great game, but even more so to attract supportive coaches and parents.

The club is very fortunate that we have managed to create a close relationship with the local high school, as well as the women of the district, many of who started playing at the local schools. This has lead to some memorable social occasions and barbeques which all help the club spirit.

As with any club, a lot of the success comes down to the administration and volunteer enthusiasm, and again Waimate have been lucky to have some members who have put in more than a decade of service on committees, looking after grounds and generally helping manage the club.

Our cricket club fields Senior, 2 Second Grade and a Fourth Grade teams in the Men’s competition, and a Ladies team as well as lower JAB sides in the local competition.

Teams from throughout the district enjoy their matches on the field and social activities off it, once they decide to visit our club at Knottingley Park, and the club spirit in recent seasons is the envy of many.

  • The 2010-2011 season was a watershed season with Waimate winning the Tweedy Cup (the Premier Senior 2 day competition), the SCCA Trophy (Round Robin Winners Two Day) as well as being runners-up in the Daily Freightways One Day Competition.
  • Our Second Grade side continued their stranglehold by retaining the Cox Cup for that competition after pulling off an upset in the final.
  • Fourth Grade won their grade for the third season in succession.
  • The JAB A Grade won their competition.
