Scholarship Awarded Glenn Drake with Justin Thompson

Glenn Drake’s cricket career is hitting new heights after the Waimate High School, student received the Peter Hooten Memorial Scholarship for cricket.

“I was pretty stoked” said the Year 10 student.

Glenn’s teacher Justin Thompson suggested he apply after receiving an email fron the NZ Sports Council outlining the availability of a scholarship for a deserving student at a decile four or below school.

My Thompson provided  the relevant information about Glenn, the school’s achievements in cricket, and the need for better training and equipment.

“Mr Thompson was pretty positive I was going to get it. It was quite a shock for it being the whole of New Zealand,” Glenn said.

Mr Thompson said Glenn’s successful application means the school gets $1500 for cricket training and to improve practice nets.

Glenn also gets $1500 which is to go to training and/or equipment.

“I’m looking at maybe (getting) coaching in Christchurch and a couple of bits of gear that I’m going to need as well.”

Glenn has played cricket for about seven years.

He has represented South Canterbury in the Year 5 and 6 development teams and Primary A, and also played in the Southern Districts representative team.

Glenn will captain the U15 team for the second time this year. He has also captained the High School A Grade and Fourth Grade teams and for the past two years has been in the 1st XI.

Waimate Win Fourth Grade Competition

Filed under: Fourth Grade — admin @ 10:47 pm

Waimate had a home final playing against Ashburton College to decide the winners of the 4th Grade this season, and finished strongly in the end to prove why they have been the competition front runners all season.

The best way to enjoy sport is when you are winning (not a PC statement), and hopefully we will be reading the names of the players in this team for many seasons to come.

Note: All this capped off a big weekend for Justin Thompson who coaches, organises and runs around after these boys as well as fronting up for his own successful Second Grade team, so give him a pat on the back when you see him (he won’t mind).

Obituary: Wiremu (Woody) Tangiora

Filed under: Fourth Grade,General News — admin @ 10:54 am

It is with great sadness that the Waimate Cricket Club extend their deepest regrets and condolences to the Tangiora family after the tragic loss of Wiremu last Friday.

Wiremu was a member of the Waimate Fourth Grade cricket team who are currently leading the competition, and I am sure he would be pleased to know that his team dedicated their win at the weekend to ‘Woody’.

Wiremu was also a participant in the twilight cricket competition, and had a relaxed approach to batting where he thought that all you had to do was lean back and ‘slap’ it.
