Waimate bow out of T20 competition
Posted in Senior on January 10th, 2012 by admin –Waimate had the priviledge of calling Aorangi Oval their home ground during the double round of Twenty20 matches played on Jan 7th to welcome the New Year in.
Temuka won a crucial toss in their first-up match against Waimate at Aorangi Oval. With the wet weather and overcast skies, Temuka bowled effectively and restricted Waimate to 97 for four from their 20 overs. Hayden Matthews top-scored with 22, while Nathan Sew Hoy added 20 and Quintin (Buck) Paul with 15 not out had yet to be dismissed in his two match comeback to cricket.
Unfortunately for Waimate, Temuka openers Richie Preston and Rory Lorimer wasted little time in chasing-down the target – Preston (40 not out) and Lorimer (48 not out) to get the total in the ninth over for a comfortable 10-wicket win.
Waimate’s batsmen came good in their final match with Celtic.
Waimate captain Jason Sew Hoy was happy with 147 for seven batting first, especially with Celtic missing usual captain Craig Davies and Dan and James Laming.
Waimate’s total was formed around contributions from Jason Sew Hoy (38), Nathan Sew Hoy (36) and Connor Farrell (31).
Nathan’s innings was a typically belligerent one, and he was upset to middle the ball and be caught on the boundary when trying to chip the infield. Jason who has struggled to get runs most of the season did himself no favours after tweaking his hamstring stretching out to run three early on in his innings and did very well to make 36 with the added confusion of having a runner at the crease (Al Reid) and not being able to move his feet, but still managed some big sixes.
However the innings of the day, or one that brought the most satisfaction to the team and no doubt the player himself, was the 31 scored by Connor Farrell, including one beautiful six over mid wicket after charging down the wicket to the bowler. For those that hadn’t seen Connor in this sort of form, he could possibly blame others after being previously run out three times this season!
While all the bowlers contributed throughout the day, it was an 86 run partnership between Jacob Naylor (69*) and Mark Tutton (34) which helped Celtic through to the win.
Jason Sew Hoy said they lacked a score of more than 50 in both their matches by one batsman to give a really dominating score.
