Waimate had the priviledge of calling Aorangi Oval their home ground during the double round of Twenty20 matches played on Jan 7th to welcome the New Year in.

Temuka won a crucial toss in their first-up match against Waimate at Aorangi Oval. With the wet weather and overcast skies, Temuka bowled effectively and restricted Waimate to 97 for four from their 20 overs. Hayden Matthews top-scored with 22, while Nathan Sew Hoy added 20 and Quintin (Buck) Paul with 15 not out had yet to be dismissed in his two match comeback to cricket.

Unfortunately for Waimate, Temuka openers Richie Preston and Rory Lorimer wasted little time in chasing-down the target – Preston (40 not out) and Lorimer (48 not out) to get the total in the ninth over for a comfortable 10-wicket win.

Waimate’s batsmen came good in their final match with Celtic.

Waimate captain Jason Sew Hoy was happy with 147 for seven batting first, especially with Celtic missing usual captain Craig Davies and Dan and James Laming.

Waimate’s total was formed around contributions from Jason Sew Hoy (38), Nathan Sew Hoy (36) and Connor Farrell (31).

Nathan’s innings was a typically belligerent one, and he was upset to middle the ball and be caught on the boundary when trying to chip the infield. Jason who has struggled to get runs most of the season did himself no favours after tweaking his hamstring stretching out to run three early on in his innings and did very well to make 36 with the added confusion of having a runner at the crease (Al Reid) and not being able to move his feet, but still managed some big sixes.

However the innings of the day, or one that brought the most satisfaction to the team and no doubt the player himself, was the 31 scored by Connor Farrell, including one beautiful six over mid wicket after charging down the wicket to the bowler. For those that hadn’t seen Connor in this sort of form, he could possibly blame others after being previously run out three times this season!

While all the bowlers contributed throughout the day, it was an 86 run partnership between Jacob Naylor (69*) and Mark Tutton (34) which helped Celtic through to the win.

Jason Sew Hoy said they lacked a score of more than 50 in both their matches by one batsman to give a really dominating score.

Daniel Dorgan was the toast of Roncalli returning from last week’s U18 tournament to take 7-19 and already has 10 wickets for the match as Roncalli routed Waimate for 44 and enforced the follow on at Knottingley Park where the our seniors still needed four more runs to make Roncalli bat again on day two.

Dorgan’s dominance with the ball was well supported by Tahir Afridi who has two three wicket hauls as well, while with the bat Harry Millar made a quick 42 not out while earlier Tom Pavletich, relieved of captaincy duties had his best knock of the season scoring 39 while most of his team got into double figures.

It was “one of those days” according to Waimate’s Alan Reid, and their second innings has been a big improvement with Glen Drake (who made the Canterbury U18 tournament team at this week’s tournament) making 45, and some hope was pinned on captain Jason Sew Hoy finding some form and turning the game into a competition by building on his 28 not out overnight.

Jason duly obliged going on to make 45, easily his best score this season, while young Lachie Robertson also showed good patience to finish 21 not out, his best senior score to date.

Set a target of 39 it took Roncalli 10 overs to win, but with a Christmas break ahead Waimate may return in 2012 recharged and still keen to defend their trophy.

Friday Night Twenty20

The latest round to be played between Waimate and competition leaders Timaru was abandoned meaning shared points and Waimate now moves into clear second. While Waimate and Timaru only have two matches each left to play and the other clubs three, a wet night, or a win and some other results to go Waimate’s way could see us progressing to our best ever Twenty20 finish yet – surprisingly the format we thought we would be strong at, we have yet to live up to the hype, so maybe it is this year!

A stubborn 72 from Star captain Phil McGregor got his side home by the barest of margins against Waimate at Mountainview High School.

Waimate trailed by 18 runs but still had 10 second innings wickets in hand at the start of the second day and with contributions from many batsmen, Glen Drake (35), Jason Sew Hoy (28) and Matthew Sew Hoy who hit four fours and a six on his way to a personal best senior score of 29.

Waimate were eventually bowled out for 174, with the medium-pace bowling of Tyson Hamilton and Alex McKenzie taking three wickets each for Star.

The batting woes continued for Star early in the pursuit of 132 for victory, as four of the top five batsmen failed to make double figures.

Waimate thought (read that as know) they had McGregor trapped leg-before wicket on four from the bowling of Alan Reid, but with player umpires being used, confusion ruled and McGregor survived. Reid still managed four for four for 67, but McGregor found support from Matt Heywood (25) and Grant Managh (21 not out), as Star scraped home.

Waimate captain Jason Sew Hoy said his team lacked the luck they needed for the win.

The seniors had to travel back to Timaru again on Saturday after getting home from there on Friday night after winning the Twenty20 match, but things aren’t going quite so well in the two day match with last season’s two finalists Waimate and Star battling it out again.

Waimate batted first after losing the toss and were soon battling as Craig Hinton decided to turn up the heat, and lost their first wicket at 0 and then 18 before a partnership got them into the 50s where three more wickets fell. Glen Drake had to retire hurt on 21 after batting a Hinton delivery away with his head and chin, but returned after a couple more wickets fell and took the attack back to the Star bowlers. He batted well to make 68 and put some respectability to the score with Waimate eventually all out for 122 with Alan Reid the only other batsman to make double figures while Hinton ended with 6-49.

Long opening spells by Alan Reid and Jared Matthews eventually brought success to have Star 29-3, but further breakthroughs just wouldn’t happen, and when Chucky Sew Hoy dropped a chance from the Star opener in the gully just after he brought up his fifty, and on what would have been Jared Matthews’ first senior five wicket bag, the momentum stayed with Star as they pushed on to 160-8 declared from their 60 overs.

Jared finished with 4-46 from his 19 overs and Alan 1-29 from his 16, while Justin Thompson and Matt Sew Hoy both grabbed one each.

At stumps Waimate had begun well needing only 8 more to wipe off the deficit at 24 without loss, and openers Naffa and Sheppo will be looking forward to a rest next Friday night and building on this start next weekend.

The Seniors travelled to Timaru for Friday night’s Twenty20 match against Roncalli who would have been seen as pre-match favourites playing at full strength with a team that included 2 English professionals and former Wellington and Canterbury players in their side, while Waimate had to fill their team with players from both the Second Grade A & B sides.

For the first time since the new Friday night competition began it was at least warm, if not too hot as a hot westerly wind swept the ground.

Alan Reid showed his experience with both bat and ball while Connor Farrell had his most timely and effective spell with the ball, Glen Drake loved the opportunity to float his spinners into the wind and the schoolboys, Scott Willoughby, Lachie Robertson and Dan Mehrtens all stepped up to the big time when asked, and in the end it was a resounding win to Waimate to begin the weekend on a good note.

The full newspaper article can be read below;

Roncalli captain Tom Pavletich turns a ball to leg while fellow batsman Ryan De Joux backs up and keeper for Waimate Nathan Sew Hoy follows the flight of the ball.

Roncalli College’s reliance on their adult batsmen came back to bite them in their four-wicket loss to Waimate in South Canterbury senior Twenty20 club cricket last night at Aorangi Oval.

Roncalli’s key batting trio of Ryan de Joux, Tahir Afridi and Ed Kilbee, who have done most of the run-scoring so far this season, were all removed before they could take the match away from Waimate and it forced the schoolboys to try to make the bulk of the runs.

After 12 overs, though, Roncalli were eight down and unlikely to see out their overs.

Only a gritty 10th wicket stand of 17 saw them through to the 19th over, and in to three figures, finishing at 101 all out.

Kilbee was removed early by Allan Reid.

It would be the first of three key wickets for the opening bowler, as he removed Roncalli captain Tom Pavletich (2), caught at gully by Nathan Sheppard, and Ben Simpson (0) who was bowled.

It was then the spin of Glen Drake which took over as he used the wind to get some drift for his deliveries.

He exploited the conditions well to take three middle-order wickets, including Harry Millar for 11 after he had put on 30 with de Joux for the fifth wicket.

The former Celtic batsman had played a calculated innings early, using the wind to assist with his boundary hitting. However, when Connor Farrell bowled him for 35, Roncalli’s chances of a big total were gone.

Farrell finished with 3 for 25, while Reid ended with 3 for 16 and Drake managed 3 for 17.

The Waimate openers of Nathan Sew Hoy and Sheppard wasted little time in trying to knock off the target.

The pair went at more than sevens runs an over for the first five, before Sew Hoy was bowled by McDuff with the second ball of his spell, for 25.

It turned the momentum of the match slightly, as Waimate went from 39 without loss to 40 for three, largely thanks to two wickets in two balls from Afridi.

The rescue operation was left to Reid, who played more sedately, as others blazed away.

Scott Willoughby hit two sixes on his way to 15, but it was Reid’s sixth-wicket partnership of 33, with Lachie Robertson, which lasted long enough to get Waimate within reach of their target.

Reid hit the winning runs with 20 balls to spare and ended on 34 not out.

Afridi had figures of 3 for 12 from his four overs, while McDuff had 1 for 19 from two.

So far there have been 3 freezing nights, so the forecast is for much better conditions this weekend, so if you are in Timaru on Friday why not pop along and give us some support.

Last time we lost by 10 runs after Naffa hit an awesome 90, so this time we want to get those extra runs for a win and hopefully Naffa can for his ton too!

We play the schoolboys Roncalli, although they are difficult if we can’t get rid of their English pros, Kilbee and Afridi.

The match begins at 5.30pm and is all over by 8.15. See you there

Earlier, 53 from Hayden Matthews had got Waimate through to 150.

The spin of Sam Carlaw kept Waimate grounded, though Celtic will be concerned main strike bowler Glenn Matthews managed only one over before succumbing to a side-strain.

Waimate got the prized scalp of Craig Davies for just 8, but it was his other opener Liddy, who anchored the innings.

He found good support from James Laming 49 and Dan Laming 33, as they cruised passed Waimate’s total and declared with an eventual lead of 80 runs.

Waimate were 13 without loss in their second innings at stumps.

Waimate put their Twenty20 loss to Star on Friday night behind them by securing a win against Timaru.

Timaru failed to get any partnerships going on a slow track.

Opener Gerald Piddock tried to anchor the innings but he became one of Drake’s five wickets, on 35, and it was left to captain Hayden Butler (20) to get Timaru through to a respectable total, which ended up being 111.

Drake ended with figures of 5 for 29, while Jared Matthews picked-up two wickets.

Waimate’s chase had early wobbles thanks to Josh Smallridge, who picked up the first three wickets with only 25 runs on the board.

Drake had been struggling for runs this season and had pulled out of the South Canterbury squad midweek but he proved to be the calming influence with the bat as he made 58 not out.

He shared in an unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership of 52 with Alan Reid, who made seven.

Star notched their first win of the 2011/2012 season with a 10-run victory over Waimate in the opening night of the the South Canterbury Twenty20 cricket competition.

Friday night cricket at Aorangi Oval produced a match which went down to the final over.

Star made 162-5 from their 20 overs, and Waimate were bowled out for 152 in the final over of their run-chase

Nathan Tubb’s 67 anchored Star’s innings last night, but it was the triple-wicket maiden from Hamish Dickson which turned the match, despite Nathan Sew Hoy’s belligerent 90 for Waimate.

Captain Phil McGregor may have won the toss and chosen to bat, but his side was quickly in trouble at 23-3, thanks to the left-arm spin of Matt Devlin who took three wickets in four balls.

Tubb’s innings, which included six fours and two sixes, kept the run-rate at more than seven an over.

He shared in a 92-run fourth wicket partnership with Danny Campbell, who made 35, before he was stumped by Nathan Sew Hoy from the bowling of Glen Drake.

A handy cameo of 17 from the usually sedate McGregor, left Waimate a chase of more than eight runs an over.

Devlin ended with figures of 3-31 from four overs.

Nathan Sew Hoy’s innings dominated the Waimate run chase. He brought-up his 50 in the seventh over, with the team on 59.

He regularly ran out of partners, but it did not stop him trying to score freely.

He used the strong breeze to muscle balls for six on to the embankments, which had Waimate cruising at more than the required run-rate for the first half of the innings.

The matched changed when Dickson removed Jason Sew Hoy for seven and Scott Willoughby and Connor Farrell without a run being scored.

Waimate went from a state of control at 94-3 to 94-6.

With Sew Hoy still at the crease, Waimate were in control, but when Jeremy Lane had him caught and bowled for his first senior wicket of the year, Star had gained a winning advantage.

Waimate needed 15 off the last over, with one wicket remaining, but a runout saw them dismissed with three balls left in their innings.

Dickson finished with 4-19 from his four overs, while Paul Arkinstall and Craig Hinton finished with two wickets.
