Waimate lose to Star – One Day Trophy

Posted in Senior on November 1st, 2009 by admin –

At Knottingley Park a depleted Waimate team batted first against Star, but with only Sam Devlin (34), Murray Prattley (20) and Extras (12) making double figures the score of 101 was always going to be difficult to defend. Medium pacers Mark Evans (3-16) and Hamish Dickson (2-24) were the most successful of the Star bowlers.

In reply Waimate started well with both Star openers out lbw quickly but then Todd Elliotte with 32 supported by Chris Anders (10) saw Star consolidate, and Tim Butler (14 not out) and Hamish Dickson with 28 not out saw Star home with 9 overs to spare and 6 wickets in hand.

Seniors begin Season with Away Win

Posted in Senior on October 12th, 2009 by admin –

In Geraldine, Waimate’s new skipper, Jason Sew Hoy, won the toss and elected to field, a quickly vindicated decision after both openers were out without scoring. At 19-3 Matt Barnes and Guy Metcalf (43) settled in to a good partnership adding 78 with Barnes eventually scoring 51 before both became victims of schoolboy Glenn Drake who ended up with 3 wickets for 28 on his senior debut. Geraldine eventually posted 155-7.  Matt ‘Chucky’ Sew Hoy had a great spell only conceding 13 runs from his 9 overs and taking a wicket while Alan Reid was quickly into stride with 2-20 from his nine over spell. Murray Prattley and Craig Booth both picked up a scalp each too.

Waimate’s reply started slowly too as both openers were gone with 28 on the board before Nathan Sew Hoy with 54 was joined by Murray Prattley who celebrated the recent birth of another son with 44 in a 96 run partnership in good time that saw the Waimate move very close to victory. Phil Chapman (3-12) who was bowling particularly well for Geraldine tried to slow proceedings, but with the other bowlers unable to match him the pairing of Jason Sew Hoy and Nathan Sheppard, both 14 not out, easily saw Waimate through to victory by six wickets and get the season off to the best possible start.

Scholarship Awarded Glenn Drake with Justin Thompson

Glenn Drake’s cricket career is hitting new heights after the Waimate High School, student received the Peter Hooten Memorial Scholarship for cricket.

“I was pretty stoked” said the Year 10 student.

Glenn’s teacher Justin Thompson suggested he apply after receiving an email fron the NZ Sports Council outlining the availability of a scholarship for a deserving student at a decile four or below school.

My Thompson provided  the relevant information about Glenn, the school’s achievements in cricket, and the need for better training and equipment.

“Mr Thompson was pretty positive I was going to get it. It was quite a shock for it being the whole of New Zealand,” Glenn said.

Mr Thompson said Glenn’s successful application means the school gets $1500 for cricket training and to improve practice nets.

Glenn also gets $1500 which is to go to training and/or equipment.

“I’m looking at maybe (getting) coaching in Christchurch and a couple of bits of gear that I’m going to need as well.”

Glenn has played cricket for about seven years.

He has represented South Canterbury in the Year 5 and 6 development teams and Primary A, and also played in the Southern Districts representative team.

Glenn will captain the U15 team for the second time this year. He has also captained the High School A Grade and Fourth Grade teams and for the past two years has been in the 1st XI.

Waimate Win Fourth Grade Competition

Posted in Fourth Grade on March 22nd, 2009 by admin –

Waimate had a home final playing against Ashburton College to decide the winners of the 4th Grade this season, and finished strongly in the end to prove why they have been the competition front runners all season.

The best way to enjoy sport is when you are winning (not a PC statement), and hopefully we will be reading the names of the players in this team for many seasons to come.

Note: All this capped off a big weekend for Justin Thompson who coaches, organises and runs around after these boys as well as fronting up for his own successful Second Grade team, so give him a pat on the back when you see him (he won’t mind).

Its not over until the fat lady sings!!

Waimate Win Second Grade 3rd Year Running

Today Waimate Second Grade travelled to “the Rock” to take on Celtic in the final and attempt to retain ‘our’ trophy three years running.

Things did not start well as the Celts started by letting Waimate play on their No 1 wicket, which those of us who saw it know was a disgrace at most levels, although it was still one of the better ones this season!

Waimate batted first and were regularly losing wickets, and then Shep retired hurt (someone told me he has gone soft since getting engaged), but he did manage to return to the middle after Todd was out to a dubious Pete Wallace decision.

Suffice to say, in the time I was watching it was generally doom and gloom for Waimate as they battled through to just pass the 100 runs before being all out.

You would think Celtic would have learned by now, not to abuse the Waimate guys, and get them riled, but when guys call Pete a “blind old %&*#” among their many other statements, only one thing generally happens…….yep….Waimate get fired up!

Today was the same, and as I followed the game via text and word of mouth, first I heard Celtic were 30-3 off 10 overs which sounded promising, and then even better the next txt said 69-9, and eventually the final one to say Celtic all out for 74.

I don’t know the intricasies of who took wickets, catches etc, but I do know that all out for 74 in anyone’s book is a hiding, and we will look forward to Pete walking up to accept the trophy at prizegiving!

Saturday Semi Final

A quick note about Saturday’s game which Waimate needed to win to make the final…JT (Mr Thomson to you schoolkids) took 5-19 and then Tim Suddaby with 55 not out and Todd Bailey with 59 not out made the chase look easy as Roncalli were put away, and MVHS/Star denied any last minute chance of making the final.

Fifties to Todd Bailey & Jason Sew Hoy restore pride.

Day 1

In Geraldine, after Waimate succumbed for 72 in their first innings to Chris Esh with his outstanding return of 6-12 including the hat-trick (ask Chucky and Sammy D), Geraldine also struggled early on and were 53-5 before Drennan with 95 and the in form Regan Tate with 68 joined forces to add 153 runs for the sixth wicket, and take Geraldine well away from any danger.

Alan Reid was again the best of the Waimate bowlers with 4-41, while Jason Sew Hoy took two wickets after relinquishing his keeper’s role in preparation for next season.

Waimate are faring no better in their second innings as Drennan with 3-7 took out the top order and Esh with a relatively expensive 4-24 has continued on from the first innings, and unless it rains it will take a Herculean effort for Waimate to save the match.

Todd BaileyDay 2

After being 49-7 overnight Waimate put up a good second innings fight and show their pride had been pricked the previous weekend going on to score 178 after Todd Bailey scored his maiden senior fifty and Jason Sew Hoy finished off a great season by passing 500 runs on his way to 79 not out.

Geraldine lost two wickets on their way to the 42 runs required, but was a deserving winner after their efforts on day one, and will be hoping all their players are available and back from University for next weekend’s final.Waimate

Celtic Match Washed Out

Posted in General News on February 28th, 2009 by admin –

The two day match at home against Celtic turned into a poker school after day one was cancelled, and day two the ground was still too damp to get started.

Since a certain club member has been haranguing the columnist, I have decided to use this space for a quick questionaire.

1. Which Waimate person understands so little about rugby, that he writes a column on grid-iron in the USA?

2. Which senior player when asked about strike rate, can truthfully say over 50%, but actually be talking about LBW dismissals?

3. Who is the only ‘ginga’ that isn’t a member of the ‘ginger club’  in Waimate?

There are not necessarily any correct answers to these questions, other than to prove I like to get the last word!
